Low-Calorie Dieting Studies
A comparatively limited, exploratory study suggests that men who are overweight and have low testosterone may benefit from following a very low-calorie ketogenic diet. After testing the effects of a very low-carb, high-fat diet in 17 middle-aged men with obesity, researchers presented their findings at the European Congress of Endocrinology this month.
Participants in these studies showed losts in significant amount of weight, reduced body fat percentage, and boosted testosterone levels. “The low-calorie keto diet has been portrayed a therapeutic nutritional strategy for the treatment of obesity with a significant effect on weight loss and, as a result, testosterone levels, as shown by authors of these studies. Keto Diet Could Provide Better Testosterone Level and Weight Lose.
The men in these trials were on average over 40 years old and had a BMI of 36.4, which indicated obesity. The studies began with average total testosterone levels of 2.5 nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL), which are on the low end of what is considered normal for an adult male, and levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) — a protein that transports testosterone through the bloodstream — that were in the normal range at 24.2 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L).
For four weeks, all of the males followed a keto diet, consuming no about 800 calories per day. The individuals shed an average weight 9.3 kilos (20.5 pounds) throughout the course of the trial, lowering their BMI by 3.15 points.
While the individuals remained obese based on BMI, at the end of the research period they had reduced an average of 6.5 kg (14.3 pounds) in fat mass. After four weeks on the low-calorie ketogenic diet, they saw average increases of 0.89 ng/mL in total testosterone and 10.94 nmol/L in SHBG.
